Free tool · from the maker of HYPER
Where I left off
Three lines before you stand up, so the next session starts from a foothold instead of a blank page.
About this tool
Before you stand up from deep work, write three lines: where you were, the very next physical step, and the one thought you don’t want to lose. This free page keeps them in this browser tab until you close it, so you can look something up and come back; nothing is sent anywhere. It’s from the maker of HYPER, an iPhone and Android app.
- Where you were, the next physical step, and the one thought to keep.
- Write it before you stand up, while the place is still in your head.
- Copy, print, share or mail it to yourself.
- Nothing is sent anywhere; the tab keeps your note until you close it.
This page is HYPER’s design position, not a research finding. It argues for a choice; it doesn’t report a study.
HYPER · free on iPhone and Android
HYPER catches the thought for you, mid-session.
- The Slip sets a thought down without stopping the clock
- “Where you left off…” greets you when you come back
- Free on iPhone and Android, no account
What goes in the note?
- Where I was: the exact spot, small enough to find again. “line 212 of the import script.”
- The very next physical step: something you can do with your hands in the first minute back. “open the test file and run it once.”
- The one thought I don’t want to lose: the idea that was forming when you stopped. “the date bug might be timezones.”
Is there research behind it?
This page reports no research. Like the two-line habit in how to protect a deep-work session, it is practical advice: the next step waits on the page instead of in your head, where the next session can find it.
When is the best moment to write it?
Right before you stand up, while the place is still in your head. If a session ends without warning, write the three lines first and tidy up after. That is the maker’s own practice, not a rule.
What happens to the note?
This browser tab keeps it while the tab is open, so a visit to another page and back finds it as you left it. It leaves the tab only when you copy it, print it, share it or send it from your own mail app; nothing is sent anywhere, and closing the tab clears it. There is no list of old notes, no reminder and nothing to tick off.
Where does HYPER fit?
HYPER, a free iPhone and Android app from the same maker, does this inside a session. The Slip catches a thought without stopping the clock and keeps it on its project under “Left here”. At the Echo you can carry one forward, and the next time you cross into that project it greets you: “where you left off…”, a nudge, never a to-do you owe. You can also try HYPER’s ritual in your browser in the Focus Room.
