About this tool

The Focus Room is a free web focus room from the maker of HYPER. Name one thing, cross about twenty seconds of dark and breath, then work with your mission and a clock that only counts up. Nothing rings. When you’re done, hold to leave and answer one question: what exists now that didn’t exist before? No account, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. HYPER itself is an iPhone and Android app.

  • One mission, never required.
  • A quiet “not now” the whole way in.
  • The clock only counts up; nothing rings at 25 minutes.
  • Set a stray thought down without stopping the clock.
  • In Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer, pop it out into a small window beside your work.
  • A reload or a visit to another page finds the session still running; closing the tab ends it and forgets it.

This page is HYPER’s design position, not a research finding. It argues for a choice; it doesn’t report a study.

How does the Focus Room work?

  1. Name one thing. One mission, in your own words. You can leave it blank.
  2. Cross the Threshold. About twenty seconds of dark and breath, a few words, and a slow 3 · 2 · 1. “Not now”, Escape or a tap on the dark takes you back at any moment, with your mission still in the box.
  3. Work in the room. Your mission and a clock that only counts up, over a slowly breathing star. If a stray thought arrives, type it into the Slip and press Enter: it’s set down, and the clock keeps going. Leave the room alone and it darkens around the work; any touch brings it back.
  4. Surface when you’re done. Press and hold “hold to surface” for a moment. A stray tap or key never ends the session.
  5. Answer one question. What exists now that didn’t exist before? Write one line to seal the session, or choose “not now”. A sealed session blooms into a node, the way it does in HYPER, and the card shows it as HYPER’s Brain would hold it. Then keep the card: copy it, print it, share it or mail it to yourself.

Why does the clock only count up?

A countdown decides for you when the work stops. Here the session ends when you end it, which is why nothing rings and there is no target to hit or miss. That is HYPER’s design choice, not a research finding, and it is the same reasoning behind keeping no streaks.

Can the room float beside my work?

Yes, on a computer. In Chrome, Edge or Firefox, “pop out” puts your mission and the clock in a small window that floats beside your other windows, with the Slip still there for a stray thought. The room waits in its tab; “back to the room” takes you there when you’re ready to surface. Safari and phones can’t do this yet, so the button only appears where it works.

What doesn’t it do?

  • No countdown and no bell.
  • It doesn’t block sites or apps.
  • No streaks, no history and no account.
  • No sound.
  • Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The tab keeps the session while it’s open, so a reload or a visit to another page finds it still running, with your thoughts; closing the tab ends it and forgets it.

How do you leave, and come back later?

You leave by holding, so a stray tap never ends the session. The Echo then asks its one question, and the end card holds your line and any thoughts you set down, so you can copy, print or share them before you close the tab.

For the way back in, write the very next step on the card, or keep a fuller note with Where I left off. There’s more on that in how to come out of deep work without losing your place.

Where does HYPER fit?

HYPER, a free iPhone and Android app from the same maker, is the full version of this room. You set one mission and cross the Threshold: about twenty seconds of dark, breath and a slow 3 · 2 · 1, with a quiet way out the whole way in. Hyper Mode shows your mission and the elapsed time, and by default you leave by holding, not tapping. The Echo asks what exists now that didn’t exist before, and the session rests in the Vault, the record of everything you make. The whole ritual is free, forever, and every seal lights a new node in your Brain. With HYPER Deep you can fly through it: your whole body of work as a living 3D galaxy you orbit and dive through, every project a constellation, every session a node sized by the time you gave it. HYPER Deep is US$9.99 a month, US$49.99 a year with a 14-day free trial, or US$149.99 once for life (US prices; each country’s store shows its own), bought inside the app. HYPER doesn’t block or lock other apps and keeps no streaks.
